Lompoc man attacked by shark receives “Shark Shield” unit

Oct 22, 2014 1:49 AM by Katie Kreider, KSBY News

A local man who survived a shark attack got a new tool aimed to help prevent any future attacks.

The owner of “Shark Shield” presented a unit to Lompoc resident Ryan Howell on Tuesday.

A shark attacked Howell earlier in October when he was kayaking near Surf Beach.

Howell has not been back in the water since the attack, but said he now plans to get back in the water.

“I wish I would have had it a long time ago,” Howell said, “but I figured it would never happen to me so that was my mentality on the whole thing.”

“Shark Shield” said its units help deter sharks.

The company also said the Australian Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and professional divers all use the deterrent to help them stay safe in the water.
